I also think it’s important we understand the 4 stages of sleep and the processes that take place in each of these four stages.

Stage one –sleep facilitates the transition from wakefulness to deeper sleep stages. It helps the body and mind relax, reducing sensitivity to external stimuli. Although brief, Stage 1 initiates the sleep cycle and sets the foundation for restorative sleep throughout the night.

Stage two –sleep benefits memory consolidation, cognitive processing, and emotional regulation. It includes sleep spindles and K-complexes, which aid in memory retention and protection of sleep stability. Stage 2 is essential for overall sleep quality and contributes to optimal brain functioning and daytime performance.

Stage three – sleep benefits physical restoration, growth, and memory consolidation, while the glymphatic system, active during deep sleep, helps clear waste products from the brain, including harmful proteins like beta-amyloid. This process supports brain health and may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s.
