CHARITY

The heart connection of humanity

WORDS: Dianne Taliani PHOTOGRAPHY Supplied

There’s no other way to put it. It’s a call out for help. The children of Nepal need food now. And every donation, no matter the size, helps. See the donation details below to find out how you can make a difference.

THROUGHOUT our lives we attract those souls who are ultimately a part of our universal tribe, all walking this earth with their own life purpose and journey.

Some of these people are true Earth angels who dedicate their lives to humanitarian service. I am both blessed and privileged to introduce you all to one such amazing woman – Dikchhya Chapagni.

This beautiful soul is the eldest of five children from a very poor Nepalese farming family. Dikchhya sacrificed a great deal from an early age. She learnt first-hand what the struggles of life were. Living in abject poverty, every day brought a scarcity of food, clothing and the most basic of everyday needs.

Her parents laboured tirelessly to support their family and Dikchhya worked hard to complete her school-level education. To achieve her dream, she moved to Kathmandu to further her studies in computer skills. Dikchhya studied for two years, staying with other family members. It was during this time Dikchhya’s deep devotion to her humanitarian service began.

Every day, Dikchhya would catch the local bus to her studies. To help ease her travel sickness, she sat near the window, from where she would see abandoned children from the poorest of families, disfigured and disabled people laying in the streets, trafficked children dumped at rubbish tips and victimised women who were homeless rummaging through the rubbish looking for food as they were cold and starving. Tears welled up in Dikchhya’s eyes as she took in the human devastation. She knew then that her soul’s purpose was one of humanitarian service.

As she attended computer college, Dikchhya gave the small amount of food she was taking for lunch to these people. It barely fed any of them, but it was a start. It also gave her time to get to know them and learn their stories. Her love for them grew daily, as did theirs for this angel who had shown them compassion. The seed of the heart connection of humanity had been planted.

After completing her studies, Dikchyya was offered a teaching role helping others learn computer skills. She was finally independent and earning 1500 Rupees (around $A17) a week. She rented a room for 600 Rupees and brought the children she had been helping there to feed and shelter them. Day after day, the owners of the house complained and eventually evicted her. Dikchhya began searching for another room and the same thing would end up happening. But she never gave up.

Through this period, one of her friends suggested she register her charity called ‘PABITRA SAMAJ SEWA NEPAL – (PSS NEPAL), which means Holy Social Service Nepal. The 1500 Rupees were not stretching far enough, so Dikchhya would beg for food, clothing and blankets. She would huddle together with all the children, all sharing one blanket on the floor at night, as there was no bed. More often than not, there was insufficient food, so she would ensure the children all got some food and she went without.

It was the hardest time in Dikchhya’s life but through the adversity, she remained positive. Her heart was full as she was saving these children from unspeakable events and they had someone who loved them with her heart.

Dikchhya’s work has expanded throughout the community. She now has a dwelling where all the children live as well as an open door for any others who find themselves in this position. She also looks after those people discarded by society. She feeds, bathes and clothes them all through the help of donations. Nepal not only has a massive problem with child abandonment and trafficking. The aged are often thrown out of their homes by their own families and have nowhere to go, so Dikchhya is their shining light, too.

Since the proliferation of Covid throughout the world, the tourist trade in Nepal is almost non-existent, which has impacted enormously on all the charities that look after these children. Right now, Dikchhya barely has enough food to feed all those who have come to rely on her, hence this communication. When we have shared what we hope to achieve for Dikchhya, many people here in Australia have shared that charity begins at home. We believe we are citizens of the world and no matter where it is, we want to help.

As tough as it has been for the majority of people here in Australia, we also are so incredibly blessed to live here. For those unfortunate to find themselves living on the street, there are food vans and churches where you can get food, charities who will help with clothing and bedding, social security, free hospitals etc – not ideal in any way, but compared to what is happening in Nepal and other countries, there is no comparison.

Dikchhya says service is “the first priority and the first duty of the human-being after their birth”.

“He or she should never forget their number one duty is that of service. I promised myself I would continue this social work, no matter at what cost or situation in my life. I will never give up nor change my decision, ever. I have given my whole life for those who need help and support. This is my dream,” Dikchhya says.

“My mum is my idol and she always taught me to help and live for others. My dad is also my well-wisher. I am very grateful to all the donors and supporters who have helped and encouraged me to keep up my social work and this life of service”.
