ROCKY HORROR is 50 years old and the new production and cast are MAGNIFICENT

The Rocky Horror Show is celebrating 50 years this year and I have been on that journey for all that time since the birth of the film with the original star cast Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist Susan Sarandon as Janet Weiss, Brad’s fiancée Barry Bostwick as Brad Majors, Janet’s fiancé   Patricia Quinn as Magenta, a maid Meatloaf as Eddy, and Riff Raff’s sister and creator of the show Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff, a hunchbacked handyman who I got to meet when here in Brisbane for then a tour of the show in 2014.

Gold Coast The Star Casino is the venue that had the opening last night, the 3rd of September with yet another great cast and production with star lead Frank N Furter  David Bedella who has performed this before as well as a strong resume of theatre musicals, and can also currently be seen playing the President of The United States in Amazon Prime’s third season of Jack Ryan. Bedella’s  Impressive voice and performance rocked the audience and had a standing ovation. Another thrill of the night was to see on stage Nicolas Hammod who fitted the part so well as narrator.

The principal cast Stellar Perry as Magenta (X Factor, The Voice, Bell Shakespeare’s The Lovers), Ellis Dolan as Eddie/Dr Scott, Darcey Eagle as ColumbiaEthan Jones as Brad, Deirdre Khoo as JanetLoredo Malcolm as Rocky and Henry Rollo as Riff Raff.

Starring alongside them on stage as The Phantoms will be Josh GatesCatty HamiltonDaniel Erbacher and Erica Wild, while Keane Fletcher and Kristina McNamara round out the cast as the Swings.

With not one factor on stage to fault or out of tune all I can say is they were an amazing cast and in fact there is so much to watch when you see this production as each cast member is exciting with their roles and dance and this new production has Cultural diversity which raises this more to engage with and I loved Deirdre Khoo as Janet, her voice is dynamic. The sets were done well and the orchestra all in tune for what was a fun night of this celebrated romp of a musical which I never get tired of.

Since it first opened in London in 1973 at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs, The Rocky Horror Show has been continuously on stage somewhere in the world and has paved its way into history as one of the classics of musical theatre.

Seen by over 30 million people in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages, The Rocky Horror Show audiences have embraced the unique and mischievous musical with fandom and passion, celebrating the gratification of the senses. Featuring one of the most famous musical numbers of all time the party floor-filler, “The Time-Warp” which remains a key to its continued success over the past 50 years, and I am sure it will be another 50 years or more that this will live on as it is timeless music.
