  • A story of how you both met?

We first met at Catherine’s year 10 school formal, when Jimmy came as a classmate’s plus-one. When we started university, our paths crossed once more as we pursued identical courses, which meant we often saw each other around campus. Following graduation, our friendship deepened, fuelled by the proximity of our workplaces. We began meeting regularly for coffee and lunch, and the rest as they say is history!

  • How did the proposal occur?

The proposal unfolded in the quaint fishing village of Reine during our Christmas holiday to the Lofoten Islands of Norway in 2022. Catherine had harboured a longstanding dream of visiting this location, enchanted by the romantic allure of red wooden houses against snow-capped mountains. Seizing the opportunity when COVID restrictions eased, Jimmy orchestrated a spontaneous trip for the proposal.

As we were strolling through the beautiful town, our journey ended at the local lighthouse. By then the sun was just beginning to set on the arctic landscape. We were taking photos by ourselves on self-timer, and as Catherine was looking for Jimmy, she found him on his knee with the ring, with the exact moment of surprise and joy captured on camera.

  • Why did you choose The Valley Estate to host your wedding?

The moment we saw photos of The Valley Estate online, we fell in love with it! It had everything we wanted in one location – a unique Glasshouse for our Chinese tea ceremony, a picture-perfect Chapel for our wedding ceremony, a grand Manor with sparkling chandeliers for our reception party, and so many jaw-dropping photo spots around the estate to capture memories for our special day!

  • What inspired you to choose your ceremony location?

We have always wanted to share our vows and get married in a more traditional indoor setting like a church. The Chapel was the perfect ceremony location for our intimate wedding, it was even equipped with a working bell tower which we got to ring right after we got married!

  • What is your fondest memory of your wedding?

Selecting a singular memory proves challenging as we had such a blast the whole day! We simply loved seeing our friends and family unite, having fun and getting to know each other, and enjoying a relaxing time in the beautiful Queensland weather (which held up!) to celebrate our special day. It was truly an unforgettable celebration of our special day.

  • What was the inspiration behind your styling?

We wanted to create a very romantic, timeless, and elegant look for our wedding. As Catherine’s favourite colour palette is soft pastel pinks, blues, and purples, we went with this as the key element of our wedding styling. Our wedding stylist, Joanne, from A&J Wedding Party Event played a pivotal role in ensuring harmony among various elements like candles, tablecloths, and other decorations. To complement the bridesmaid dresses in a soft blue (as pink felt too ordinary and overdone), Joanne also coordinated blue hues into our stationery and banners, harmonising seamlessly with the overall colour palette.

  • Details of the dresses, brand, style, and process:

Selecting a single wedding dress that would be perfect for the entire wedding day proved challenging. After months of searching, I ultimately chose to opt for five different outfits to wear throughout the course of our special day. This decision aimed to ensure I had absolutely no regrets, with each dress carefully chosen to complement the distinct locations around The Valley Estate.

For the morning Chinese tea ceremony, Jimmy and I decided to purchase a matching set of traditional Chinese outfits in gold. Despite the traditional colour being red, we believed that gold would better complement the modern setting of the Glasshouse, where we hosted the formal tea ceremony for our family members.

In the Chapel for the Western-style ceremony, my dream of donning a traditional wedding gown with a long, flowy train came true. After numerous fittings, I selected a princess wedding dress from Nicole Milano’s Couture collection. Featuring a sweetheart-plunged neckline, glittery tulle, and floral lace embroidery on the bodice and skirt, the gown added a touch of enchantment. Despite the midsummer wedding, I insisted on the long train to elegantly drape the aisle as I entered the Chapel.

Transitioning to the reception, I wore a strapless hand-draped tulle ball gown with a crisscross bodice from White by Vera Wang. I loved how the dress was so voluminous but light and added a touch of drama as I walked down the candle-lit staircase with Jimmy.

For the first dance, I wore a square neckline dress with A-line silhouette in white luxe taffeta fabric from Jenny Yoo. Admiring both the fabric and style of the dress, I had the long sweeping train tailored to just shorter than floor-length for unrestricted movement, allowing me to dance freely while being spun and lifted by Jimmy.

Finally, for the after-party, I chose a short gold sequined dress, providing maximum flexibility to kick on for the rest of the night!

  • Details of the suit, brand, style, and process:

I went in a tuxedo with a white jacket by P. Johnson – because when else would you be able to wear a white jacket? This selection significantly contributed to achieving the luxurious look and feel we aspired to create. I wholeheartedly recommend the P. Johnson team for any bespoke suits, given their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.

  • Favourite dish from your reception?

We chose the share-style menu; the Market Fish with Aleppo pepper burnt butter, chives and crispy capers was the highlight for us, the overall presentation and flavours of this dish were divine. The Gelati Cart post-ceremony also proved to be a delightful addition, adding a nice touch to satisfy Jimmy’s sweet tooth.

  • Favourite photo location?

The timeless charm of the Chapel’s wooden arched windows set against the backdrop of a grassy paddock, dotted with horses and occasional kangaroos, captured our hearts. The scene was further enhanced by the vast array of romantic floral arrangements skilfully crafted by Fontana Florals.

  • Words of advice for future couples who are planning their wedding:

While the wedding planning process may be tiring and sometimes feel like a never-ending list of admin, the gratification of witnessing everything effortlessly falling into place on the actual wedding day to create our perfect day made all the hard work worthwhile.

Despite the recurring advice from friends and family to “not sweat the small stuff,” for those who value details and wish to avoid any future regrets, we encourage you to prioritise what makes your wedding uniquely yours. While there are so many cookie-cutter approaches to planning a wedding, don’t be afraid to follow your heart and add in any elements that you think best reflect you as a couple.
