Long before it appeared on luxury travel radars, Sumba was spoken about in hushed tones among surfers – a remote island of empty breaks, powerful swells and raw, elemental beauty. More than twice the size of Bali yet visited by only a fraction of travellers, it remains one of Indonesia’s most compelling and least-explored frontiers.

On a recent visit, time spent at two resorts here – NIHI Sumba on the island’s wild west coast, and Cap Karoso on its calmer shores, revealed why Sumba is now drawing a new kind of traveller – those seeking not just waves, but space, authenticity, and travel that feels considered rather than consuming.
