After surviving a double heart attack, fitness expert Rick Brennan reflects on the power of preparation, the importance of resilience, and why investing in your health today could save your life tomorrow
This piece is more personal than anything I have written before. If you have followed my journey or even some of my journey through Ocean Road articles over the years, you know I’m passionate about health and wellness. But recently, that passion was tested in a way I never imagined.
I suffered a double heart attack.
Even now, writing those words doesn’t feel real. I have spent over three decades building a life around health and strength. I’ve trained hard, eaten well and helped others do the same. So to find myself in a hospital bed, heart failing was confronting. It shook me, not just physically, but emotionally. You don’t expect it to be you.
But what hit me harder than the diagnosis was the reality that, according to my cardiologist, had I not spent my life strengthening my heart through years of consistent training and good nutrition, the outcome could have been very different. Now I know all the benefits of these things first hand so I guess in some ways I naively thought I would be one of the ones that would move through life always strong and healthy.

This experience brought home a truth I have always known but is now reinforced tenfold. The work you do today may just save your life tomorrow.
The Power of a Strong Heart
Most people think of fitness as something tied to weight, appearance or performance. And yes, those things matter. But when you are lying in a hospital room, none of that matters like your capacity to recover does.
When you have the ability to move, to train, to be active – that’s a gift. And it’s one we often don’t truly appreciate until our capacity changes. I’ve always trained hard, eaten well and looked after my body, not out of obsession, but because I could. Because I knew one day, I might need that strength. That day came. It’s about creating a body that can support you when you can’t push like you used to. A body that still functions well when you need to slow down. Eating nutritious food, moving with intention, building lean muscle these things all matter. They are the foundation that carries you when life shifts. You don’t train just for now. You train for the times when your health becomes the most important thing in your world.
If You Have Been on the Fence
If you have been putting off your health, telling yourself you will start next week, next month or when things settle down, I get it. Life gets busy, fast – we blink, and we fast forward what feels like six months. But I can promise you this – nothing will ever be more valuable than your ability to recover, to fight back and to keep going.
Don’t train for how you want to look this summer. Train so your heart can withstand something you never saw coming. Train so your recovery isn’t a mountain, but a hill. Train so you can bounce back when life hits you hard.

What You Can Do Today
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. I’m not saying go run a marathon or hit five workouts a week starting tomorrow. Start simple. Move your body every day. Lift something. Stretch. Prioritise real food over packaged. Drink more water than you think you need. Get to bed on time. Laugh. Breathe. Check in with yourself.
Most importantly, stop seeing your health as a chore. It’s a privilege. And I will tell you now, from firsthand experience, your body will remember how you treated it when it’s called to step up.
This heart event changed me. It brought me back to why I do what I do. It reminded me of the quiet strength in small daily efforts. And it gave me even more purpose in helping others see the urgency in putting their health first.
If you have been sitting on the fence, consider this your nudge. You may not feel the benefit today. But one day, when life tests you, you will feel the impact of every smart choice you made.
