Moving into autumn on the Gold Coast

We’ve combined this idea with the trend of natural movement that’s being continually embraced to give an individual take on curly hair.
The shape adds height at the top and reduces volume at the widest part of the hair while the perimeter sits with the texture and volume – reminiscent of the shape of a bow turned vertically.

Curls must be treated with care, and cut according to what your styling routine is at home. Meaning, if you scrunch your curls at home, that’s what we need to do in the salon to ensure they sit perfectly. Equally if you only ever blow-dry your curls and straighten them we need to take this into account.

Adding moisture is key. Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair so layering conditioning treatments, leave in conditioners and curl products that fight frizz and bring back the springiness to curls, followed by shine top-coats will create the ultimate curl. Think big bouncy and frizz free!

One of the things we repeatedly hear from guests in our salon is that they love how their curl looks when it’s wet, but once the hair dries it’s a frizzy mess. Consultation is key but in 99 per cent of these scenarios we can fix that with the right cut and styling advice.

Our three top curl tips are:

1) Moisture moisture moisture! You will struggle to over do it!!

2) Be gentle – no rough rubbing, tugging or brushing, the gentler you treat them the more they’ll behave

3) Cuts are key – hardly ever is length off a problem, but internal shape, weight and texture will give your hair the edge and keep it looking fabulous.

Adornments for hair have been around for a long time but over the last six months, they’ve totally blown up.
So should you be wearing them and if so how should you be wearing them?
Well the majority of us, unless you are rocking an oh so chic pixie cut, tie our hair up. So straight away we are using a hair tie to do so – and what’s the fun in a plain elastic?
I think our hair accessories should reflect our personalities. Whether you’re sporty, sophisticated or girly, choose something that’s ‘you’.
I’m a sucker for ribbons so anything adorned with bows I love.

However, if you prefer a clean line there are some great barrettes around made from leather or tortoiseshell.

You can also choose gems or rhinestones, which no longer equate to only evening wear.
The rules are simple – just like fashion anything goes for any occasion. This main thing is you feel comfortable wearing it.
A ponytail, a half up, a chignon or just a slide keeping your fringe out of your eyes; the options are endless when it comes to hair accessories and they can totally transform your hair style.

It really is the new jewellery.
As the saying goes – more is more! So be brave, stick in a slide, scarf or headband you wouldn’t normally reach for and mix up your winter look. Well, it’s really not cold enough on the GC for hats, gloves and scarves so hair accessories it is!

Fashion week

This week our salon has been in full swing – not only with our lovely clients but also Fashion Week auditions! As TONI&GUY is the proud sponsor of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney the whole company has come together & back stage teams are selected to do the hair.

So exciting!!

Last year we worked on Camilla, Fashion Weekender, Swimwear and Next Gen and had an absolute ball creating awesome looks to go with the brand new fashions.
This year we cannot wait to see the shows and hair trends but we are predicting tousled hair with a slight bend, plenty of hair accessories and curls curls and more curls.
It’s always fun after working on the shows to be able to give our clients something a little more edgy and catwalk rather than a “prom” style updo. So if you want some inspo for your next big event please give us a call or pop by for a consultation.

Dette Cliff owner of Toni & Guy Broadbeach sits down with her colleague Joe Habbaki of Toni & Guy Armadale after he just won NEW CREATIVE FORCE 2018 at the Prestigious Hair Expo Awards…
Dette: Joe, first up congratulations, what an achievement taking out such a huge award as New Creative Force throughout Australia! The collection is phenomenal, Tell us about the collection and your inspiration?
Joe: Cheers! It was such an honour for sure, my collection called The Beautiful People draws on dark histories and bold aesthetics to display the allures of Gothic and heavy metal cultures. The main inspiration was Gothicism in fashion history, which we have seen.
Dette: At Toni & Guy we are always talking about the link between hair and fashion, how did that come into play for you when you were thinking about this collection?

Joe: I was really inspired by Marc Jacobs’ Louis Vuitton Swan Song and a vintage Comme des Garcons show circa AW 1992, these were iconic shows and it pushed me to think about subcultures than centre around black fashion – gothic culture, Japanese Lolita’s and heavy metal music.
Dette: The result is fantastic – you must be thrilled with the images?
Joe: Of course! I was lucky enough to work with a fabulous team who helped bring my ideas to life. More than just having the colour black I wanted an emphasis on shape and texture, both with the hair and the fashion. High hairlines, shaved sections and a messy yet controlled movement in shape.
Dette: And have your clients been queueing up for one of your brilliant looks?
Joe: Ha not exactly! Well it’s not an everyday request, I’ve definitely been doing undercuts and fades but in a much more client friendly way!
Dette: Thanks so much for taking the time in chatting with us. I’ll see you in London for the Toni&Guy brand new collection launch!

Summer is always a huge time of year for us at Toni & Guy. After travelling to London in October to see the unveiling of our brand new collection FUTUREWISE, we get back and release the collection to Australia.

FUTUREWISE is TONI&GUY’s creative approach to future proofing, the ability of something to continue to be of value in the future.
Moving into 2018 we forecast fringes, a modern approach on seventies inspired layering, and an array of bold colours to be top of peoples wish lists for hair. Creamy whites, violet brunettes, coppers and yellows and blues bring a fresh take on pastels.
Whether going for a long or shorter shape, getting the right texture will be paramount to nailing a look so layering the correct products for your hair type is key.

Label.M Texturising Volume Spray comes in original or brunette and will give your hair instant texture and volume. It’s a must have product for backstage and a must have for everyday life too!
Condition and integrity of the hair is paramount to you nailing your chosen look, luckily with our partners at Label.M and Wella there is a treatment, product or solution to every problem as technologies are advancing and the best thing is professional advice.
Please come and see us for a consultation and we can future proof your style!!!

Bernadette: Some of my clients apologise when they have a mood board of pictures torn out of mags or on their phone because they think they are being fuusy! Don’t apologise! This is a great tool for us – it gives us a visual on your likes and dislikes. My number one tip would be ask your stylist to show you different styling tips and products when you have your hair cut. Sure there will be some you prefer more than others but if we never try anything different you might not stumble across your new favourite look!

Lissy: My favourite blow-dry of the moment is textured waves, less “done” than standard curls, but more than just rolled out of bed. The look is perfect for an understated evening look but just as great to elevate your hair in the daytime without looking like you have tried too hard.

Sondrene: Being a Head Technician in the salon it’s my job to customise and personalise colours for my clients hair types, face shapes, lifestyles and personalities. And also mix it up when people are getting bored! I love doing this because no two clients are ever the same – my top tip would be to get a professional colour consultation to see if there is a way to take your colour to the next level.

Grace: Chop it off! Hair grows back, so whether you want to take an extra inch off or have a drastic restyle my advice is to go for it! Seeing a stylist you trust and understands the amount of time you are willing (or not) to put into your hair on a daily basis as well as up keep is essential to getting a look you love.

Maryam: I am so excited to be working on some Gold Coast heads of hair! Having just arriving from London I am looking forward to mixing up the edgy style of Londoners with the beachy laid back style of the GC because we all want to have a cut with variety depending on the mood we are in. Versatility is key!
