XXXXXtreme presence

WORDS: PHOTOGRAPHY

When given the opportunity to test drive the new model BMW X5 M50d from Gold Coast BMW dealer principal Kathleen Broadway, I took full advantage. Being an SUV man myself, this seemed the perfect Dream Drives review for our Autumn edition.

It goes without saying the new X5 looks amazing with the all-new look and feel; it’s bigger and bolder than ever before. The car oozes that luxury SUV that every family wants to feel when on the road.

There’s something new to discover from every angle on the new exterior design, which is finished in sapphire black metallic. At the front, the new enlarged BMW kidney grille, along with decorative trim on the air inlets and outlets, gives the side profile an athletic feel, while design elements provide the new BMW X5 M50d an impressive air of authority.

The rear features a new-look set of LED taillights and satin finish rather than chrome exhaust tips. The car feels so much bigger than any X5 I have ever tested before.

Let’s look under the bonnet, as I am dying to tell you what’s under there.

Wait for it …

400 hp

four turbos

3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel

0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds

The statistics and the feel of this power plant are difficult for me to explain; they simply have to be felt to be appreciated!

It takes a bit to excite me and I must say, I fell In love with this car. It caters for luxury SUV and the power you wouldn’t expect from a car of this size. It’s being billed as ‘the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the automotive arena’. The 3.0-litre diesel has four turbos strapped to it — that’s two times two — for 294kW and 760Nm.

760 Newton-metres of torque — similar to the 488 GTB Ferrari

      It’s time to take a step inside…

The BMW X5’s interior components work together to elevate driver and passenger experience. Entertainment comes via BMW’s iDrive system, now up to version 7.0. With a huge 12.3-inch screen — the same as the digital dashboard’s — DAB digital radio, 16 speakers, and the usual Bluetooth and USB, the new system is slick and powerful as you would expect.
The coloured LED lights throughout the panels add a new level of ambience and can be colour-controlled from the screen in front of you depending on your mood. The panoramic view of the sky through the X5’s electric glass panorama sky lounge sunroof is always a treat.

The new BMW X5 achieves new levels of mastery. It has unparalleled control on and off the road. And with sharpened driver assist and enhanced connectivity technology, it’s more dominant than ever. Features such as lane assist and parking The M50d X5 commands attention no matter where it goes.

We tested the car around the Main Beach precinct, and I was lucky enough to have my daughter join me for the review. The car was set to Sport mode, and for those who know me well the suspension went down and the exhaust was opened wide in Sport mode. The note did sound very aggressive for a six cylinder!
The car was a delight to drive and would be the perfect addition to any family. Families who want to ooze style and sophistication should apply first, as this car will take you to a whole new level of motoring.

The team at Gold Coast BMW would welcome anyone looking to test drive this vehicle to please call them direct on 5557 7999.
