Shine On

The city’s finest arts and culture talent will be on centre stage at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with 10 artists/collectives announced…

The program, Generate, is designed to ensure artists and collectives can develop incredible content for the GC2018 arts and cultural program to accompany the Games celebrations.

Generate is a key component in the push to ensure locals shine in 2018.

Mayor Tom Tate says it was a highly competitive funding round.“More than 60 applications were received, the highest number of applications for a City of Gold Coast Regional Arts Development initiative,” he says. “Creating opportunities such as Generate grows our own talent to deliver a world-class artistic and cultural offering. We’re ensuring they are front and centre on the world stage.”

Minister for the Commonwealth Games Stirling Hinchliffe says the GC2018 arts and cultural program would celebrate the spirit of the Commonwealth, reflect Queensland’s lifestyle, culture and creativity and capture the authentic spirit of the Gold Coast and its communities through extraordinary and memorable artistic events.

“The arts and cultural program is a chance to showcase and grow Queensland’s creative sector and engage our home-grown artists with some of the world’s best,” Mr Hinchliffe says.“We want this program to not only promote our beautiful state to a global audience but to transform the cultural life of the Gold Coast and contribute to a lasting legacy.”

Creative Lead for the GC2018 arts and culture program, YaronLifschitz, who played a key role in the assessment process, said he was impressed by the calibre of local artists.

“We are looking forward to working with these talented artists to dream and develop ambitious ideas,” Mr Lifschitz says. “The wider community of artists and creative and cultural groups will have further opportunities to be involved as those ideas turn into a reality in the lead up to, and during, the Games.”

Successful applicants have been invited to develop their ideas over “ think tank” weekends before obtaining funding for creative development and possible inclusion in the Bleach* Festival 2017. At the third and final stage, the projects will be considered for inclusion in the GC2018 arts and cultural program.
Generate is a City of Gold Coast initiative through the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. The Program is also supported through a partnership between the City of Gold Coast and the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games.

The GC2018 arts and cultural program will extend the Games experience beyond the stadiums, transform the cultural life of the Gold Coast and provide Queenslanders with unique and world-class participation and engagement opportunities.
