Are you thinking of moving to the Gold Coast? This is one of the most amazing parts of Australia, the city known for surfing, gorgeous skyline, wild nightlife, theme parks and rainforests. With the city full of tourists, attractions and happenings, you can be guaranteed to have an amazing time living there. However, when preparing for a move, you probably have a lot of questions that range beyond “Where am I going to eat”? Here’s what it really means to rent and live in the Gold Coast:

Are you ready for a change of lifestyle?

If you need a change of lifestyle, the Gold Coast is definitely going to deliver. This tourist destination is lively yet chill, full of things to do and see. Consider what kind of lifestyle you want to lead in the future and see whether the Gold Coast can satisfy your expectations. For many, the answer is yes, because who wouldn’t want to live in a place with constant holiday vibes? You won’t get too much peace and quiet though.

Can you afford it?

Living on the Gold Coast is not cheap. The costs of living greatly depend on your lifestyle, your accommodation, your neighborhood, your spending habits, etc. The rent for homes goes at about 450$ a week (you can find cheaper apartments or much more expensive lux villas as well) and this will be your biggest expense. Transportation will cost you another $150 a month and your weekly shopping will go from 30 to 50 dollars per week. Of course, these are only estimates and you will see how you can make your expenses higher or lower, depending on your lifestyle.

Did you look at the accommodation?

Renting an apartment with your significant other or a roommate is one of the cheapest ways to live on the Gold Coast. When looking for rent houses in Australia, people usually compare to Sydney to get the most accurate comparison, and the good news is that Sydney and the Gold Coast have approximately the same prices. So if you’re moving from Sydney, you will be well used to the rent. If you’re coming from abroad, it’s best to spend a few days in a hotel or hostel, until you get to know the city and the Aussie vibe. Then you can start looking for rental units in the Gold Coast and find something more permanent.

What about your job?

The unemployment rate on the Gold Coast is not very high (5.4% as of September 2021). When compared to the rest of the state of Queensland, the Gold Coast is standing pretty stable. The best thing you can do for your lifestyle is to secure employment before you move because if you want to live comfortably on the Gold Coast, your safest bet is to work. Luckily, this is a tourist destination so you can always find a job, especially in hospitality. Of course, there are other jobs available since this is a serious business center.

Can you rely on public transport?

Of course! Public transport on the Gold Coast is very reliable and affordable. The main public transport means is the tram (light rail) but the bus is also very popular and reliable. The city metro is not super big, but with its 16 stations running through the city, you’ll love to use it (just be careful because it runs from 5 am to 12 am). To pay for public transportation, grab a Go Card—a rechargeable card that allows you to use the tram and bus whenever you like, with discounts! Taxis also exist in the city, but the rates can be quite expensive. Cycling is another great option of transportation, and the city is blessed with a network of safe bike paths that go all over the place and reach every part of the city.

Living on the Gold Coast is very exciting. Great entertainment, beautiful beaches, interesting tourists and friendly locals—all of this will make your life more magical. If you consider all the pros and cons, you’ll end up on the Gold Coast in no time.
