Q&A Spotlight: Mahalia Barnes – From Soul Queen to Mary Magdalene

WORDS: Caroline Russo hushhushbiz.com PHOTOGRAPHY Jeff Busby & Juliet Taylor

As the powerhouse voice behind Mahalia Barnes and the Soul Mates, and the daughter of Australian rock royalty Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia Barnes has long carved her own distinct path in music. Now, she’s on a new journey — stepping into the iconic role of Mary Magdalene in the Jesus Christ Superstar Australian tour. We caught up with Mahalia to talk about the challenges and joys of taking on such a beloved musical, her incredible family legacy, and how she stays grounded in the whirlwind of performance life.

Q: Congratulations on playing Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar! How did the role come to you?
I was asked to come in and audition for the producers and the creative team when they started the casting process. This role was one that really interested me, so I thought I would give it a try!

Q: How did it feel when you were picked for Mary? Where were you, and how did you celebrate?
I was thrilled to be offered the role of Mary. I’ve never been a part of a stage show like this before, so I was really nervous and excited… I think I probably celebrated by calling my brother David Campbell and his wife Lisa — they really helped me through the process!

Q: What has it been like stepping into such a legendary role that has been performed by so many iconic women over the years?
It’s a real honour. The legacy is really special — some incredible women have played the role of Mary over the years. Kate Ceberano and Marcia Hines in this country — I look up to, admire, and respect them both so much. I feel proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to step into their shoes!

Q: Mary Magdalene is such an exciting and emotional role. What has challenged you most as a performer? And what have you enjoyed most, especially with this being your first theatre production?
I was very nervous to perform in this capacity. I’m comfortable as a singer and love to sing big, emotional and powerful songs, so that side of it was just exciting — I do love Mary’s songs! But to take my performance to the next level and take on acting and choreography made me really nervous. I’ve never acted before, but it didn’t take long to find my connection and understanding of the character and shape my interpretation of the role.

I really feel lucky to have been part of such an extraordinary and talented cast who have held my hand through the challenges, supported, inspired, encouraged and taught me so much! I also had amazing guidance and direction from the creatives — in particular, two powerhouse women on the creative team: Bree Tipoki (our resident choreographer, occasional director, swing, total boss — everything, to be honest) and Laura Tipoki, who was our Musical Director in Sydney and throughout the rehearsal process. I’ve loved all of it and feel I’ve grown a lot as a performer and personally.

Q: You’re not only a singer and performer, but also a wife, mum, and daughter in a big, talented family. How do you juggle it all — especially now while touring with Jesus Christ Superstar?
It’s a challenging juggle, I can’t lie! I also manage Dad, which is a HUGE job, especially with his new record and busy schedule. My eldest daughter Ruby has recently released her debut EP… so I’ve been keeping very, very busy. By Sunday night after eight shows, I’m exhausted!

But I’m so fortunate to have an amazing husband, Ben Rodgers. He’s not only a ridiculously talented musician, writer and producer, he’s also the best dad. He’s been holding the home fort down and doing the lion’s share of the family stuff, to be honest. I also have a wonderful team working closely with me on album and touring logistics and planning. I certainly can’t take all the credit!

Q: With such a strong musical stage background, has this experience made you consider more theatre roles in the future?
Never say never. I’m always open to doing all the things — I love to push myself and step out of my comfort zone. I love to sing and I love to work with people who inspire and challenge me. If the right show and the right role came up at the right time, I’d definitely consider it.

Q: Your stepbrother, David Campbell, has also had an incredible career in both music and theatre. Do you ever trade notes or support each other when it comes to performance and touring?
We’re such great friends. I absolutely adore David and have so much respect and admiration for his talent and work ethic. He’s an exceptional performer who’s done so much. I’d be a fool not to seek his advice, especially when it comes to theatre!

We’re lucky enough to share the stage and sing together often — and not much could bring me more joy. We’ve helped each other a lot over the years and love working together and collaborating whenever we can.

Q: With your father Jimmy Barnes’ recent health challenges and his amazing comeback, how has that shifted or deepened your perspective on family and work-life balance?
He’s a force of nature. He’s faced a few unexpected challenges lately with his health — he’s been so fit and well in recent years, looking after himself better than ever — and yet he’s had a few unavoidable obstacles.

I’m constantly inspired by his commitment and passion for performing and creating new music, his love for his work and his fans. I’m also grateful for his dedication to all of us as a family. He works so hard, but there is always a balance, and family is always the priority.

Q: When things get hectic, what grounds you most — music, family time, something else?
Music and family, for sure… but also food. Our family loves to cook and share delicious food. So do my dearest friends — it’s a real love language for us all and can really replenish me when things are crazy. Sunshine is really important to me — even five minutes sitting still with the sun on my face is like a complete reset!

Q: What’s the best advice your mum or dad ever gave you — whether it was about music, motherhood, or just life?
I don’t even know where to start. I guess the thing I’ve always been grateful for is that they instilled in me the importance of being authentic and truthful — with myself and others. To work hard and to always find joy and love in life. To never stop learning.
