One of Australia’s most popular contemporary artists, Lindy Lee, has been appointed to undertake a stunning integrated artwork set to feature at Awaken Residences, situated on top of the Point Danger peninsula in Coolangatta.

Awaken Residences, designed with elegant curves and scalloped edges, has plans for a massive art installation, set to become a beacon of the development and a sophisticated design in its own right.

The project is the next in the pipeline for S&S Projects, and is headed by Paul Gedoun, off the back of the stunning sell out of the $74 million Flow Residences only a block away from the proposed new development.

The new landmark project has already obliterated sales records with a $8.15 million sale of its two-level panoramic vista penthouse and 50% of its whole-floor apartments within weeks of receiving a DA approval from council.

The artistic flair planned for the new project has been inspired by the powerful works of Lindy Lee, who is of Australia’s most prominent contemporary artists practicing in the public realm.

Lindy Lee has a career which spans over four decades and she is one of the leading contemporary artists working in Australia today. With Lee based locally in her studio just south of the border, the installation of her artwork is set to bring a sense of community feel back to the area.

Lee’s contemporary works have reached audiences and critics world-wide with pieces displayed across Australia and internationally.

Lee’s artwork has expanded to the public eye in recent years, and her most popular works include The Life of Stars, Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, and The Garden of Cloud and Stone, Chinatown public domain in Sydney.

Internationally Lee’s The Life of Stars – The Tenderness of Rain, Province Midtown Cultural Centre in Zhengzhou, China, was widely admired by the public, and circulated throughout the art world as critics applauded Lee’s creative vision and originality.

With influences in Australian culture blended with her ancestral heritage, Lee is set to create a landmark work of art that combines an international flair with the elements of the local laidback coastal lifestyle of Coolangatta.

“I’m thrilled to be on board for this project, this is really something that’s going to become a jewel in the crown for the Coolangatta suburb,” said Ms Lee.

“The strategy for the artwork draws from considered research into the site’s character and history, framing a curatorial approach for a landmark to reflect the distinct elements of this location and the community.”

S&S Projects managing director Paul Gedoun said the artwork for Awaken Residences will reflect the project’s unique location, on one of the highest elevations on the city’s coastline with a unique perspective that offers 360-degree views across two states.

“We’re really excited to have Lindy Lee on board with Awaken Residences, she will bring unique design elements and we are very much excited to see her creative ideas for our project come to life,” said Mr Geduon.

“We are looking to create something extra special on this site with a work of art that combines the key elements of the relaxed Coolangatta lifestyle – the sun, sea and surf, whilst reflecting on the area’s history and geographical significance.

“Apart from one of the most spectacular beachfront locations on the Gold Coast, with the waves of Snapper Rocks below where so many of our greatest surfers honed their skills, there is also so much local history to draw upon to inspire this artistic expression.

“This has never been done on the Gold Coast on this scale before, where the built form provides a blank canvas that will deliver a superb cultural focal point for the community to enjoy.”

The developer is collaborating with Brisbane-based UAP (Urban Art Projects), a global group that works with artists, architects and developers to bring ‘uncommon creativity’ to the public realm.

UAP has major workshops and studios in Brisbane, New York and Shanghai from which it has delivered more than 1500 projects globally.

Awaken Residences is located at the top of Point Danger peninsula and will rise 12 storeys on a prime site at 275 Boundary Street in Coolangatta, walking distance from the nearby Flow Residences.

The developers have taken a similar approach to their new project, capitalising on the strength of demand for premium apartments on the southern Gold Coast.

Buyers have swooped in on the project, drawn by Awaken’s breathtaking position, just a block away from Flow Residences which is currently under construction and due for completion in 2021.

The site is currently home to the popular Café DBar, and its operators have eagerly seized the offer from developers to continue their legacy at the iconic location as part of Awaken.
