Australia is nearing the winter which usually brings much more pleasant temperatures with degrees perfect for a nice ride. If you’re itching for the open road, here are a few tips that will help you organize a perfect New South Wales road trip. From destination ideas to packing tips, with this guide, your next trip will be the trip of your life.

Choose your route

Since New South Wales is big and super fun, there are various routes you can take—it’s truly impossible to pick one that stands out. Choose your route according to your interests, budget and time, and you’ll surely have a ton of fun and excitement that fits your preferences. All lovers of history, science and wonder will love a tour of the caves and fossils of NSW. This is a 4-day road trip that will take you through bush trails, caves and various fossil sighting spots, while later you can enjoy cold-climate wine and tasty food. If you just want to enjoy the coast and live a high lifestyle full of quality food and good wine, then consider taking a drive from Sydney to Canberra. Want to experience something out of the ordinary? Drive to the outback and explore the wonders of the Great Artesian Basin where you can soak in the warm springs and enjoy the casual atmosphere of remote towns.

Get a good vehicle

A good vehicle is crucial for the success of your road trip. Firstly, you want a ride that’s working properly and won’t quit on you after 50 kilometres. Secondly, you need something comfortable because you’ll be spending a lot of time in your vehicle. If you don’t have that at home, you can always go looking for a good rental. No matter how many people are travelling, we recommend finding a van rental in Sydney and getting something with plenty of boot space. If you decide to rent a van, you can easily use it to sleep, relax during your trip and save a bunch of money along the way. For more remote destinations, a 4WD vehicle with special sand tires and equipment might be necessary.

Pack like a boss

Packing for a road trip is actually quite easy, however, it does depend on your travel style. Whether you’re sleeping in your van, camping or choosing lux hotels—it all affects your packing. In most cases, 4-5-day road trips require each person to pack an equivalent of hand luggage for a plane ride. And if you’re travelling in Australian winter, pack plenty of warm clothing, maybe even something waterproof because NSW can get quite wet.

Getting around

Google Maps are usually very useful for any Australian road trip and they will serve you well as long as you have an internet connection. If you think your connection will fail you (it’s more than possible in certain more remote parts) then it’s a good idea to download maps before time and consult them when you need them. This is especially useful for foreign road trippers because internet data can cost you a lot, even if you have a local SIM card.

Brush up on your driving

It doesn’t matter if you drive every day in the city or if you just got your license, it’s important to brush up on a few NSW driving rules. Foreigners will be surprised to see Australians driving on the left side of the road. This will take some time to get used to, and don’t get frustrated when you start your wipers instead of your blinkers for the 100th time. In NSW, kids up to age 6 must be properly restrained and seated in special car seats or booster seats. Also, keep in mind that fines all over Australia are quite steep, so follow the speed limit.

Are you pumped for your NSW adventure? Pack your car, buckle your seat belt and try to do all the spots on your New South Wales road trip itinerary.
