One Evening In Mudgeeraba

As top chefs craving a close-knit community call Mudgeeraba home, foodies flock for its vibrant flavours and hinterland charm.
There’s something magical about the heart of Mudgeeraba. Nestled at the foothill of the Springbrook Mountains in the Gold Coast’s hinterland, the quaint downtown village with a rich history comes alive under canopies of fairy lights, vibrant restaurants and the buzz of friendship enjoyed over good food.
Just 15 minutes from the Gold Coast’s stunning beaches and Surfer’s Paradise, here you’ll find every kind of music, from the beats of the pizzeria to the soft melodies of whiskey bars, or an acoustic solo artist at the Cuddihy Park stage, surrounded by picnic blankets and unwinding families.
So, what makes this little place so special? Let’s hit the trail!
We’ll start with Lenny Pizzeria & Bar. A smash hit with locals, you’ll be in flavour heaven with their pared-back, brilliantly curated wood-fired pizza menu (think wild combinations of pear and gorgonzola, or pepperoni with hot honey). The alleyway seating is homely and charming, while award-winning bartenders mix top-shelf cocktails. The vibe here is electric. The warmth of the staff and the joy and laughter of the diners makes this more than a neighbourhood pizza joint – it’s a rite of passage for Mudgeeraba visitors.

Then we take a step into culinary genius at Anekawa, a hidden Japanese gem tucked behind mysterious auburn curtains. Once inside, you’ll step into an intimate world of soft candlelight, shadowy elegance and warm serenity. Chef Koki’s curated Omakase menu is a love letter to Japan and his family’s legacy of home-cooked, seasonal produce – some provided by the locals themselves, who have embraced Anekawa with open hearts and grateful bellies.

If you like a meal that tells a story, Pangaat Indian Restaurant & Bar brings the tale of regional Indian dishes to life. Humble and welcoming, Chef Akash and his wife Rima guide newcomers into a richer understanding of Indian cuisine, providing history and a regional story for each flavour combination. From almond-pumpkin lamb curries to butter chicken, Pangaat makes food feel like family.

Next door, you’ll find The Wine Barrel, a homegrown share-plate local treasure boasting exquisite and innovative share plates, desserts and good wine. Its cosy, rustic setting is inspired by the village’s logging history, but the hospitality – that’s all chef and owner Warren Carnall and his wife Michelle. A true foodie who loves to play with taste and texture, Warren is inspired by international flavours and creates truly beautiful dishes, from yellowtail Kingfish sashimi to crispy soy quail.

After dinner, you might want to visit one of Mudgeeraba’s famous whiskey lounges: Whisky Lounge and Whiskey@59. Whisky Lounge is the village’s first dedicated whisky bar, a cosy nook that locals love for its warm, unpretentious and welcoming spirit (and the other 130 spirits in the form of whisky from around the globe). It offers live music from Thursday to Sunday, “write and sip” evenings, songwriting workshops and more. You can even have food delivered from nearby restaurants. It’s not just a bar, it’s a local’s haven for connection and entertainment.
Whiskey@59 offers a huge range of whisky brands as well as fabulous cocktails, mocktails and cheese platters. It’s a speakeasy-meets-mixology heaven, with an elegant and shadowy atmosphere, a ceiling you must see to believe, and a host of fabulous events year-round.
