WORDS: Andrew McKinnon PHOTOGRAPHY Ellamay Fitzgerald

6pm Saturday June 26 at Coolangatta Sands Hotel

Opening in conjunction with the 20th annual MP Classic competition, Legends of the Surf celebrates the Gold Coast’s rich surfing culture and the illustrious talent from our local surfing community that has shaped it with an epic night of art, music and film.

Launching 6pm Saturday June 26 at the Coolangatta Sands Hotel, Legends of the Surf includes an opening address from World Champion surfer Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew and Surf Reporter Andrew McKinnon as the MC to present the fundraising auction of five pyrographic portraits of surf legends by Emily Rose Hastie, followed by hair-raising performance by local band Scrappz featuring Rabbit’s second son Keo Bartholomew on the drums.

Legendary surf photographer Dick Hoole has confirmed never-before-seen footage of the epic 28 day Burleigh swell in 1975 will screened on the evening, followed by the freshest of Gold Coast surf footage from Mr Clips aka Lachlan McKinnon. Opening night attendees will also have the chance to win various lucky door prizes and participate in the raffle for a Flying Fish surfboard donated by The Surfboard Warehouse and customised by Emily Rose Hastie. It will be an epic evening not to be missed.

All profits raised from ticket sales and 60% of the Legends of the Surf exhibition sales proudly support the important coastal conservation work of Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast, Gold Coast World Surf Reserve, and the empowering mental health education and stigma reduction work of LIVIN.

The exhibition (free entry) will be open from 26 June – 8 July 2021 at The Art Space on 19 McLean Street, Coolangatta, featuring portraits with permission of Gold Coast surfing legends including Steph Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Rabbit, Mark Occhilupo, Michael Peterson, Peter Townend, Dick Van Straalen, Peter Drouyn, Dick Hoole, Andrew McKinnon, Wayne Deane, the Neilsen brothers and Phyllis O’Donnell.
