The Gold Coast is experiencing a significant spike in flu cases this year, with flu notifications more than doubling compared to the same time in 2024, an increase of 102%. Across Queensland, more than 18,000 flu cases have already been recorded, a 35% increase compared to last year.
Nationally, more than 80,000 flu cases have been reported, reflecting a substantial rise compared to last year’s timeline. Queenslanders are being urged to book a free flu vaccination now through their local community pharmacy.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia Queensland Branch President Chris Owen said vaccination is critical to slowing the spread.
“Flu season generally runs from May to September, and the best time to get vaccinated is before it peaks,” Mr Owen said.
“Even though the flu is already spreading through the community, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. It takes a few weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective, so now is the right time to book in,” he said.
“So far this year, there have been over 1800 hospitalisations in Queensland due to influenza, underscoring the importance of vaccination in easing pressure on our health system,” said Mr. Owen
Mr. Owen also said that community pharmacies provide convenient access for people in regional and metropolitan areas alike. The more people who get vaccinated, the fewer hospitalisations will result from influenza, helping free up hospital beds for more urgent and complex medical needs.
“With community pharmacies located in almost every town across Queensland, the program ensures that vaccines are accessible to Queenslanders no matter where they live.”
“Getting vaccinated doesn’t just protect you. It helps protect those more vulnerable, like our elderly and our youngest children, who are more likely to get seriously ill from influenza,” Mr Owen said.
Announced by the Crisafulli Government earlier this year, the Queensland Free Flu Vaccination Program fully covers the cost of flu vaccinations for all Queenslanders aged six months and older. It is part of a broader effort to reduce preventable illness and ease pressure on the state’s healthcare system.
Gold Coast locals can contact their community pharmacy or visit findapharmacy.com.au to book a free flu vaccination.
