Four local breweries serving fresh pours, good vibes and cooling escapes for the hottest season yet
The festive season has come around once again, and summer sure felt like it came early for Queensland this year. Luckily, we have some amazing local watering holes to quench our thirst and cool us down this summer, covering most suburbs on the Coast.
Padre Brewing Co., Miami
Starting with the newest member of the local Gold Coast brewery scene, Padre. Located in the newly built Miami precinct around the corner from Miami Marketta, a few familiar faces are behind the brewery—former OG operators of Ze Pickle and early pioneers of the GC hospo scene. A sleek fit-out and open beer garden create a welcoming environment for all to enjoy, including your fur babies. With a full kitchen offering everything from New York-style pizzas with blistered rims to birria-style tacos, soft pretzel bread and squares of lasagne, these guys have you covered.
The beers they’ve been working hard on showcase a core line-up including Australian lager, pale ale, IPA, French pale and cerveza. Head Brewer Mitch Carlin focuses on crisp lagers for the purists, easy-drinking pale ales for the all-rounders, hop-forward IPAs for the enthusiasts and dark brews for those who like their beer with a bit more broodiness. With 14 taps on deck, Padre offers quality beer made for people who care as much about the company they keep as the beer they drink.
Precinct Brewery, Miami
Next on the list, a few kilometres south, is Precinct Brewery. Not a new kid on the block, but a locals’ spot for a thirst-quenching easy-drinking lager, session ale or Pacific Ale to wash down the mouthwatering menu focusing on all the pub favourites. With 12 taps featuring favourites like XPA, rice lager and Open Borders pale ale, plus unique flavours such as mango kettle sour, there’s something for everyone.
From beer-friendly share plates to gourmet pizzas and hearty meals, the dining menu celebrates locally sourced ingredients prepared with skill and served with warm hospitality. Head over with your mates and groups to enjoy the live music on acoustic Fridays and Sundays, comedy nights and tipsy trivia.
Black Hops Brewery
Black Hops Brewery is still going strong, with the new founders leading the brand into new waters. The rebrand of their beers for the East Coast range focuses on easy-drinking brews that are sessionable. A notable favourite is the East Coast Haze, which is pale and hazy yet lively and juicy, showcasing tropical and citrus fruits—particularly grapefruit and kaffir lime—thanks to Mosaic, Amarillo and Eclipse hops.
This refreshingly smooth and juicy hazy pale ale features a subtle touch of tropical fruit, making it perfect for those summer sessions. The Black Hops breweries are located in Burleigh Heads and Biggera Waters, both offering welcoming, dog-friendly taprooms with great beer and good vibes. With 16 beers on tap at each location, including their award-winning G.O.A.T. Hazy IPA and Hornet IPA, you’re spoiled for choice.
Roji Cat Brewery, Miami
Spoiled for choice in Miami, Roji Cat Brewery has quickly grown into locals’ weekly plans with its Japanese-style brews and Japanese tapas to snack on. Head Brewer Satoshi Tamura helms the onsite brewery, offering 11 house brews on tap with five frequently rotating as Satoshi experiments with new flavours.
The house-special Japanese rice lager stands out, alongside a unique black lager that’s crisp, clean and sessionable. The enclosed air-conditioned area keeps you cool while you enjoy Japanese street food like chicken karaage and pork gyoza. And there’s a karaoke room out the back for when you find that liquid courage. Bring your mates and grab a stool—you’ll love it.
These are a few of my current favourites to frequent, and being quite centrally located for both north and south Gold Coasters, there’s plenty of opportunity to visit these great local spots. Whether you’re after a crispy lager to beat the heat, a hazy IPA to sip on with mates or just a dog-friendly beer garden to while away a Sunday arvo, Miami and the surrounding suburbs have got you sorted.
During your summer this year, go check out one of these local legends and show them your support. These small businesses are the heartbeat of our local scene—pouring quality beers, serving up killer food and creating spaces where the community comes together. So grab your crew, bring the four-legged friends and make supporting local part of your summer ritual. Your taste buds (and the brewers) will thank you for it.
Cheers to a cracking Gold Coast summer!
