What began as a childhood prophecy has become a life’s work: Gold Coast local Megan Gray has turned her lifelong love affair with the sea into a career curating journeys that transport travellers to their own private paradise. The Island Calling

When I was a young girl, my mother was told by a clairvoyant that one day I would live on an island. At the time, it sounded like a whimsical fairy tale, yet it unfolded in ways I never could have imagined.

My earliest memories are of life overseas. Born into an expat family, the first seven years of my life were spent far from Australian shores in the UK, USA & South Africa. When my family eventually repatriated, we stopped in Mauritius for a holiday that would shape me forever.

I can still see it now… the blinding white sand, turquoise water lapping gently at the shore, coral gardens teeming with colourful fish, and the warm smiles of the islanders. I didn’t know it then, but that trip planted something deep inside me. Island life became my compass.

An Island Apprenticeship

Years later, that compass led me to the travel industry – and to my first job as Sales Executive for Turtle Island, Fiji. This wasn’t just any resort; it was a private sanctuary for 14 couples, each with their own private beach.

It was my dream role. The owner took me under his wing sharing wisdom that has shaped my career ever since: be unique, don’t compete, and create something so personal that no one else can replicate it. I took that to heart. He also encouraged me to design a life where I could work from anywhere.

That philosophy – exclusivity, personalisation, and freedom – became the foundation of my career.

Island Life on Sentosa

The prophecy came full circle when I moved to Sentosa Island, Singapore, where I lived for a decade. Sentosa was a living postcard: lush greenery, quiet coves, and the hum of island life all around. It felt like a resort, but it was home – a curated community, in a picturesque setting, exactly the rhythm of life I cherished.

Here, in the vibrant expat community, travel was part of everyday conversation. After school holidays or long weekends, friends would gather over coffee or wine to swap travel stories and recommendations. The Maldives was the name that always lit up the room. Those who had been would recount tales of overwater villas and turquoise lagoons with stars in their eyes; those who hadn’t hung on every word.

A Maldivian Awakening

When I finally made my own first trip to the Maldives, I understood. The Maldives was unlike anywhere else I had travelled. One resort per island, endless turquoise horizons, and service so personal it felt like they knew me better than I knew myself. It was the purest form of seclusion and indulgence I’d ever experienced.

It was there, in that magical setting, that the idea for Luxury Island Travel crystallised – a bespoke travel service specialising in the world’s most breathtaking island escapes.

That expertise also extends to luxury cruising and curated journeys that reach beyond islands – offering travellers new ways to experience the same sense of seclusion, indulgence, and soul-stirring connection to place.

I remove the noise, open doors to hidden gems, and design journeys where every detail is considered. Living the Legacy

I’ve honoured my former boss’s legacy, and built a business that allows me to keep travelling and experiencing new islands – so every recommendation comes from genuine experience. My clients can feel that difference. They know they’re not just booking a trip; they’re getting my eyes, my ears, and my heart on the ground.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve visited 23 Maldivian islands, each with its own personality and rhythm. I’ve swum alongside manta rays and whale sharks, sipped cocktails hand-delivered by dhonis (traditional Maldivian sailing boats) pulling up to my sun drenched deck, and watched the sun sink into a horizon of endless blue and soft pinks.

More importantly, I know which islands are perfect for honeymooners seeking cinematic seclusion, which work for young or multi-generational families, and which are sanctuaries for those chasing wellness, sustainability, or a touch of adventure.

Though Luxury Island Travel remains a “well-kept secret” among those in the know, word is spreading. New clients often tell me, “We can feel the magic in what you do.” That’s the best compliment I could ever receive.

Living on the Gold Coast, I know we’re surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful beaches yet there’s still something special about finding a place where the only footprints in the sand are yours, where you can surf a wave without another soul in sight, watch a sunset with no one but your loved one beside you, and where silence is broken only by the sea.

That kind of exclusivity still exists in the world – you just need to know where to find it. And that’s exactly what I do -matching travellers with the island that feels like it was made for them, sharing the best time to go, the most memorable ways to spend your days, and the secret spots that most travellers never discover.

From Prophecy to Passion

For me, this isn’t a job – it’s a calling. When you do what you love every day, it’s not work. I’m not just matching people to destinations; I’m helping them discover moments they’ll carry for a lifetime.

From the brilliant reefs of Mauritius to the private beaches of Fiji, the cosmopolitan calm of Sentosa, and the secluded perfection of the Maldives, I have lived the dream – and now I am sharing it.

And that childhood prophecy? It didn’t just come true. It became my life’s work.
