At a defining moment in the Gold Coast’s evolution, David Wang marks a milestone that goes beyond concrete and steel — the commencement of construction on the much-anticipated $1.5 billion Paradiso Place, a landmark three-tower residential and retail precinct in Surfers Paradise.

David Wang

For Wang, this project is more than another development; it is a culmination of decades of international experience, entrepreneurial vision, and steadfast commitment to shaping vibrant, liveable cities.

In 1987, at the age of 22, he arrived in Australia with just 20,000 Hong Kong dollars borrowed from relatives, a plane ticket, and enough funds for six months of English classes.

After completing a Bachelor of Business at the University of Technology in Sydney, graduating in 1991, he joined a local accounting practice in Sydney, and later – inspired by suburban developments and lifestyle-focused communities – he set about building developments in China that combined residential living with schools, shopping, and community amenities.

Wang’s first major solo project in Shanghai came in 1998, in Pudong, offering spacious homes and gardens for the middle class. Despite the Asian financial crisis, the development succeeded, combining practical living spaces with schools, shopping centers, and other facilities — a model influenced by Wang’s experience in Australian suburbs.

SPG Land Holdings Ltd., founded by Wang, now operates across large-scale master-planned residential and urban complexes in China, including the critically acclaimed Peninsula Hotel on Shanghai’s Bund, named the world’s best business hotel by Fortune magazine in 2010.

With a national portfolio of residential, commercial, and hospitality projects, SPG embodies Wang’s philosophy: creating value-driven developments with public spaces, lifestyle amenities, and a focus on community.

“I’m trying to sell a lifestyle, not just a product,” Wang explains. “It’s very different from other developers who only build luxury homes. Our projects combine quality living with affordability and public benefit.”

In 2012, David was the winner of the Australia-China Outstanding Alumni Award.

David Wang first came to the Gold Coast in the late 1980s, initially drawn to its beaches and vibrant lifestyle. Since then, he has witnessed the city grow from a coastal town of 240,000 residents to a bustling metropolitan hub of over 750,000 people, with expanding education, health, and cultural sectors.

Wang’s vision for Paradiso Place reflects decades of experience in urban development, community building, and long-term investment strategy. The project comprises:

  • Three residential towers rising over 40 storeys, delivering around 845 premium apartments with ocean views and resort-style amenities.
  • More than 2,800 square metres of premium retail, dining and lifestyle space, activating the streetscape and contributing to the vibrancy of Surfers Paradise.
  • A design focused on community and pedestrian-friendly public spaces, ensuring the development is a hub for residents and the surrounding area, not just an isolated tower.

Wang’s approach is shaped by practical lessons from China and Australia. Just as he applied insights from Australian suburban developments to Shanghai, he now leverages urban planning principles and lifestyle-focused design to enhance the Gold Coast. Every apartment in Paradiso Place has an ocean view, and amenities are designed to create a true resort-style living environment — integrating wellness, co-working, recreation, and retail spaces for residents and the broader community.

“The important thing is never give up,” Wang says. “There are always challenges — construction costs, inflation, global market volatility — but the long-term fundamentals of the city are strong. I believe in its potential.”

The commencement of construction on Paradiso Place is more than symbolic. It represents tangible benefits for the Gold Coast, including:

  • Thousands of jobs across construction, retail, and service sectors.
  • Urban activation, enhancing public spaces and stimulating the local economy.
  • Lifestyle-focused communities, offering integrated amenities and quality living.

Wang is committed to the long-term success of the project rather than short-term speculative gain. “I want to build something of lasting value,” he says. “Selling the land was never an option. The final product will contribute to the city for decades.”

As the Gold Coast prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, Wang views this period as a generational inflection point rather than a temporary surge. Paradiso Place, scheduled for completion in stages through 2031, will play a defining role in shaping the city’s identity, providing jobs, lifestyle amenities, and a model of sustainable urban development.

“Conviction is not reactive to market cycles – it is grounded in enduring belief,” Wang says. “I see the long-term potential of this city. That is why I build here.”

Paradiso Place stands as a declaration of confidence: in the city, in its residents, and in a future built on vision, experience, and commitment. For David Wang, the next chapter of the Gold Coast has already begun.
