Cyclone Alfred – A Resilient Gold Coast Faces the Storm
WORDS: Brian Usher PHOTOGRAPHY Ted Grambeau
Cyclone Alfred hit the Gold Coast with fierce force, reminding us of nature’s unpredictable power. The storm, which made landfall over the weekend, brought torrential rain, intense winds, and widespread damage, affecting homes, businesses, and beaches from Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta.
Winds reached up to 130 km/h, uprooting trees, damaging buildings, and knocking out power to thousands. For days, parts of the Gold Coast were in darkness, as crews worked tirelessly to restore electricity. In addition to the devastation of property, coastal erosion took a heavy toll on our beaches. Sand dunes and beachfront infrastructure were destroyed, and familiar landmarks like cafes and boardwalks were swept away. The sight of these beloved spaces vanishing left many in shock, highlighting how vulnerable our coastline is to the forces of nature.
Yet, while the storm wreaked havoc, it also created extraordinary conditions for surfers. Cyclone Alfred brought massive swells, transforming the southern Gold Coast into a surfer’s paradise. The iconic Kirra Barrels, known worldwide for their perfect, hollow waves, came to life with conditions rarely seen. Surfers from around Australia and beyond flocked to the southern beaches, chasing the once-in-a-lifetime waves that offered long, fast barrels. It was a surreal contrast: while the storm left destruction in its wake, it also showcased the natural beauty of the Gold Coast’s surf breaks, proving once again why this stretch of coast is considered a global surf mecca.

For local businesses, the storm posed significant challenges. Many were forced to close for days, impacting the tourism-driven economy. Yet, the resilience of the Gold Coast community shone through. Businesses quickly adapted, offering takeaway services, while neighbors looked out for one another, ensuring that those in need had support. In the aftermath of the storm, the focus turned to recovery, and the conversation about the future of our coastline intensified. Coastal erosion has become a pressing issue, with experts calling for sustainable measures to protect our beaches from future storms.
Cyclone Alfred may have tested us, but it didn’t break us. The Gold Coast is known for its resilience, and this storm was no exception. As our community rebuilds, the spirit of togetherness and determination is clear. While Alfred left its mark on the city, it also reminded us of the unique beauty and strength of our coast.
In the end, the Gold Coast has weathered storms before, and it will weather them again. The beaches will be rebuilt, businesses will reopen, and surfers will return to the perfect barrels of Kirra. Through it all, the heart of this community remains unshaken. Here’s to the recovery, the rebuilding, and the enduring spirit of the Gold Coast.
