Brisbane opens up with WICKED MUSICAL to Standing Ovation

The opening of Wicked was nothing short of exhilarating, with excitement and awe running high from start to finish. This might just be one of the finest productions I’ve witnessed, from the stunning stage sets and costumes to the impeccable casting—another triumph for John Frost Productions.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary since premiering on Broadway, Wicked continues to be one of the most successful and beloved musicals worldwide, having captivated over 67 million audience members. With a legacy of over 100 major awards, including a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award, six Helpmann Awards, three Tony Awards®, and six Drama Desk Awards, it’s easy to see why this production remains a phenomenon.

The Australian cast is truly stellar. Gold Coast’s own Courtney Monsma shines as Glinda, the bubbly “good witch,” while Sheridan Adams dazzles as Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with emerald-green skin who eventually becomes the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Their performances are mesmerizing, with each song resonating powerfully—making it a joy to witness their talent unfold on stage.

It’s a delight to see one of Australia’s most esteemed actors, Robyn Nevin, in the role of the devious Madame Morrible, alongside Todd McKenney as the Wizard. The supporting cast is equally strong, with Adam Murphy as Dr. Dillamond, Shewit Belay as Nessarose, Kurtis Papadinis as Boq, and Zoe Coppinger standing by as Elphaba.

The ensemble and swings bring incredible energy to the production, adding depth and movement to each scene. This talented group includes Christian Ambesi, Conor Bann-Murray, Brittany Carter, Olivia Castagna, Eli Cooper, and many more, all of whom contribute to the show’s electric atmosphere.

Whether you’re seeing Wicked for the first time or the tenth, this production is pure magic. Its timeless story, memorable music, and breathtaking staging make it a must-see once again for fans and newcomers alike.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked’s musical staging by Wayne Cilento and original direction by Joe Mantello ensure that it remains as fresh and engaging as ever. Produced in Australia by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia, along with Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, this production is a thrilling treat for all.
