MENTAL HEALTH

Are you making yourself sick?

WORDS: Diane Demetre PHOTOGRAPHY Supplied

Are you watching the news? Are you having arguments with people on social media? Are you feeling more anxious, uncertain, or angry? Then stop!

Stop any activity that fuels fear in your mind, body, and soul because if you don’t, you will make yourself sick. All fear-based emotions create dis-ease which turns into physical, mental, and emotional distress leading eventually to more serious illnesses. As far back as 1985, neuroscientist Dr Candace Pert published ground-breaking research showing that our feelings and emotions can trigger peptides to carry chemical messages throughout our body which chemically change the cells in our body. Her research demonstrated that our mind and body are not separate, and we cannot treat one without the other.

Yet so many people still think that disease is random. They believe some people are blessed with good health, while they are not. The difference is not genes or good luck. It’s mindset and energy resonance.

Since everything is energy, it means that our body is the expression of our resonant frequency at every moment in our lives. Better than any medical book, it gives us messages as to what we need to know.

When we resonate at the higher energetic frequencies of love, appreciation, joy and peace, our bodies naturally demonstrate super health. When we resonate at the lower frequencies of anxiety, stress, anger and fear, our bodies try to get our attention. Firstly, through subtle messages, like little niggling sensations, such as a cold or stiffness of the joints or a small injury. These are reminders that we’re not aligned with our highest frequencies. If we ignore these whispers, they will turn into shouts, screaming at us, while discomfort and disease run rampant through our bodies.

Whether we accept it or not, we are each responsible for our own health and well-being by the thoughts we think, the way we feel and the actions we take.

Our body is a sophisticated system always trying to get our attention and telling us what we need to do to realign and readjust our energy to get back into the flow of our highest frequency.

We have a responsibility to honour and value our bodies on a physical level—to care for, love and provide our embodiment with the nutrients, exercise, hydration, and restorative sleep needed to function most effectively. If we respect our car enough to fuel it with the correct octane, check the air in the tyres and service it regularly, surely our bodies are worthy of the same attention.

With movable joints, our bodies are made for action, not to slouch inactively in front of electronic screens or on couches, hour after hour. Research in recent years has illustrated the outstanding benefits of exercise in reducing the risk of dementia, slowing aging, protecting, and improving brain function, and promoting psychological health and good mood. The consequences of a sedentary life are as well documented as they are grim. People with low levels of physical activity are at higher risk of worsening back pain, depression, and anxiety and of early death by many kinds of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s not that we don’t know this, it’s that we don’t act on it. And if coronavirus is teaching us anything, it’s showing that anyone with a pre-existing health condition is at an increased risk of infection. So, whether it’s a stick or the carrot that gets us off the couch, we must move!

Remaining properly hydrated is also crucial to our physical health and brain function. Water is the best nutrient of all because it detoxifies, aids in exercise recovery, hydrates the skin and increases metabolism. Sipping 8 glasses a day keeps the doctor away.

Then there’s our ultimate life-sustaining, preventive measure—our breath. Filling our lungs deeply and controlling the rhythm of the breath increases the oxygen permeation in our blood vessels, which in turn reduces inflammation throughout our body. When we energize ourselves with conscious deep breathing, we resonate at a higher energetic frequency and create an internal environment less likely to foster infection.

Though many don’t realize it sleep deprivation can have serious short and long-term consequences including delayed reaction times, glucose levels, mood, headaches, impaired memory and focus, and hormone imbalances. Not enough restorative sleep has been shown to shrink the brain. The way our brain processes information, consolidates memories, makes connections, and clears out toxins, suffers when we deprive it of healthy, deep sleep. Improving our sleep habits improves your brain and in turn, our mindset.

Living healthy, healthful lives is our birthright. Excusing ourselves from being healthy by blaming our genes, circumstances or conditions is an erroneous, disempowering belief. Deepak Chopra, M.D., and Rudolph E. Tanzi, Ph.D., co-authors of Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being demonstrate how we shape our gene activity and how genes act as a tool for personal transformation. “Everything you do, every choice you make, whether it is a good habit or a bad habit, is changing your genetic activity.”

Since we are energetic beings with a body, it behoves each of us not to fall into fear during the current health crisis for we will surely change the chemical messages in our body and become more susceptible to that which we fear—infection.

So, here are my 7 tips to stop making yourself sick.

  1. Listen – Pay attention to the messages your body gives you. Don’t ignore them.
  2. Trust –Trust and act on what your body tells you. Develop an intuitive relationship with your body and learn what and when to eat, exercise, drink, and sleep.
  3. Be Accepting – Your body is a work in progress. Be patient with it.
  4. Be Respectful – Your body is here for the long haul. There are no trade-ins. Take care of it.
  5. Be Supportive – Feed your body the best foods, nutrition, and water.
  6. Be Responsible – Everything you feel, think, believe, energize, and enact influences your health and well-being. Your health is your responsibility.
  7. Be Appreciative – Show love to your body and stop criticizing it. No more judgment.

Our body is a remarkable operating system and when we nourish our energetic physiology by listening, trusting, accepting, respecting, supporting, and appreciating our body, it responds in kind by demonstrating super health and well-being.
