But his entrepreneurial signature can also be seen as far away as Niseko, where he was one of the early developers in what is often referred to as “Aspen of Asia” along with good friend and head of Hutchinsons Builders, Scott Hutchinson.

“I was doing the Aspen experience with my family and Scott was doing Whistler and what we realised with young families was how difficult it was to get from our accommodation to the ski slopes with all our kids and ski gear,” says O’Rorke.

“A good friend recommended we visit Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, and specifically Niseko. What we found was unbelievable powder snow in an authentic Japanese village. We were lucky to buy the best site in Niseko, in the middle of the village, right next to the Family Ski Run. This site became home of the luxury apartment building, now known as Alpen Ridge.

“We developed the building with Australians in mind – people and families who wanted space and convenience right in the heart of Niseko with easy walking access to restaurants, bars, shops and spas in the village.

“We have taken our families there since completion in 2007 every January and we’re now taking our grandchildren there.”
