HEALTH & WELLBEING
A Weekend of Stillness and Strength at Gwinganna

Rediscover balance, beauty, and a sense of wonder in the Gold Coast Hinterland
The moment we turned off the road and wound our way up to Gwinganna’s gates, something shifted. The Gold Coast skyline faded into the distance, and the hum of everyday life gave way to birdsong and the gentle hush of wind in the trees. For years, we’d heard friends speak in hushed, reverent tones about this wellness haven in the Hinterland. “Life-changing,” they’d say, their eyes softening as if remembering a secret sunrise. Now it was our turn to find out what all the quiet fuss was about.

We arrived on Friday afternoon. The retreat unfolds on a ridge, surrounded by lush bushland, a place that feels both wild and meticulously cared for. Staff greeted us with the kind of warmth you wish you could bottle and take home—genuine, unrushed, like they’ve got all the time in the world, and now, so do you.
After unpacking our first stop was the InBody Scan using the InBody 570 Body Composition Analyser. This sleek piece of technology promised to tell me everything about myself short of my Netflix password. I stepped on barefoot, gripped the handles, and waited as it silently judged me in percentages and ratios. Melissa followed suit, graceful even on what felt like the wellness equivalent of a weigh-in. Later in the afternoon, we sat with a Duncan – Head of Personal Fitness for our scan interpretations. It wasn’t a lecture—more like a roadmap, complete with suggestions to help steer us toward a healthier path. We left armed with detailed reports, which felt oddly comforting, like having a wellness dossier tucked under your arm.

That evening, dinner was our first taste—literally—of what Gwinganna does best: nourishing you without a hint of deprivation. Organic vegetables, locally sourced proteins, and flavours so bright and fresh they made the concept of “clean eating” feel like a reward, not a sentence. As someone who’s often guilty of chasing deadlines with a takeaway container in hand, the idea of eating slowly, really tasting the food, was an unexpected luxury.

Saturday began not with a blaring alarm or the frantic scroll of emails, but with Qi Gong on the mountain top as the first blush of dawn softened the valley. If you’ve never done Qi Gong, imagine a gentle dance between breath and movement, a kind of moving meditation where your body feels like water and your mind finally shuts up long enough for you to hear the birds.
Post-Qi Gong, we joined a guided bush walk. There’s something grounding about crunching along a leaf-strewn trail, eucalyptus scent thick in the air, and knowing your biggest decision for the day is whether to do a Yin or Yang activity later. Yin, for the uninitiated, is slow and restorative. Yang, more dynamic.
The spa called to us like a siren song, and who were we to resist? Treatments here aren’t an afterthought; they’re a philosophy. Melissa opted for a deeply hydrating facial while I, in my infinite wisdom, surrendered to a full-body massage that seemed to iron out years of deadlines, camera bags and the endless invitations to Gold Coast social events. By the time we floated back to our villa, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to nap or relax in our private plunge pool.

Meals punctuate the day like joyful commas—breakfast bowls brimming with seasonal fruit, lunches that manage to be both vibrant and comforting, and dinners that feel like a celebration of what happens when you let nature take the lead. We ate slowly, savoured deeply, and somewhere between the herbal tea and the raw cacao slice, I realised how rarely I give food my full attention.
Sunday unfolded with the same grace as the day before: Qi Gong under a sky rinsed clean by dawn, followed by another bush walk, more activities, and yes, another spa indulgence.
The final flourish was a Wellness Seminar, a thoughtful session that stitched together everything we’d learned and felt over the weekend. It wasn’t preachy; it was practical, a gentle nudge toward carrying some of this Gwinganna magic back into our everyday lives.

As we packed to leave, a strange resistance tugged at me. I wasn’t ready to swap this sanctuary for the surge of emails waiting on my laptop. But maybe that’s the point. Gwinganna isn’t an escape; it’s a recalibration, a reminder that health isn’t a luxury—it’s the foundation for everything else.
If you’re a local on the Gold Coast or Tweed Coast, consider this your invitation. Don’t wait until life feels overwhelming. Come here before you need to. Trust me—your future self will thank you.
