A Taste of Mexico Meets the Broadwater: Catalina’s Summer Evolution

WORDS: Anthony Do Rozario PHOTOGRAPHY Imogen Harkness

Catalina embraces a bold new chapter, blending the flavours of Mexico with coastal sophistication on the Gold Coast

Perched elegantly on the edge of the shimmering Broadwater, Catalina has long been a destination where locals and visitors gather for a touch of coastal glamour. Known for its sun-drenched afternoons, refined cocktails, and a menu that celebrates the best of fresh, seasonal produce, the venue has now embraced a new culinary chapter—one that fuses the spirit of Mexico with its signature laid-back sophistication.

It all began on Tuesdays. Catalina’s Mexican nights—conceived as a midweek burst of colour, spice, and fiesta—quickly grew from a lively experiment into a cult favourite. Regulars returned week after week for hand-pressed tortillas, smoky salsas, and slow-braised meats that rivalled the street food stalls of Mexico City.

“The response was overwhelming,” says the team at Catalina. “Our guests wanted more than just Tuesdays—they wanted that vibrancy, that authenticity, woven into their everyday dining experience.”

And so, Catalina listened. This summer, the restaurant will permanently integrate its famous Mexican dishes into the à la carte menu, ensuring diners can enjoy their favourites—think tacos with depth and soul, zingy ceviche, and rich authentic birria—any night of the week. The Mexican influence won’t replace Catalina’s modern Australian identity; rather, it will add a bold, dynamic accent that reflects both the energy of the Gold Coast and the global tastes of its guests.

In celebration of the season, Catalina is also planning on extending its dinner service this coming summer, with plans to open six nights a week, Monday to Saturday. With the longer summer evenings, there’s no better time to sip a mezcal-infused cocktail on the water’s edge, watch the sunset burnish the Broadwater, and linger over a dinner that moves effortlessly from ocean-fresh oysters to plates bursting with Mexican spice.

Catalina’s evolution feels like a natural step—an ode to its community, its guests, and the joy of bringing people together around the table. This is dining designed for long nights, laughter, and a taste of wanderlust.
